Seen From The Hilltop By a Casual Observer [Article in Kane Republican]

Description

This article reports that Colonel Henry W. Shoemaker, American minister to Bulgaria and publisher of the Altoona Tribune, has begun a small zoo in emulation of Dr. McCleery's wolf park, in which he has been interested since it began. Shoemaker currently has four Bulgarian wolves, a Bulgarian jackal, and an Egyptian eagle. The article also reports that Dr. McCleery likely receives more fan mail than anyone in Kane, and that a metropolitan newspaper plans to print a full page of photos of his wolves on a Sunday during the winter, with a supplemental radio talk. Partial text of the article is quoted below.

Partial Text

Another captive wolf pack has sprung into being. Col. Henry W. Shoemaker, American minister to Bulgaria, writes to The Republican's publisher, one of his old friends, that he is starting a miniature zoo. The pack is not nearly as large as that of Dr. E. H. McCleery and the wolves are not the magnificent lobos, but Col. Shoemaker seems to have an interesting exhibit in the making.

Following is his letter:

Legation of the United States of America
Sofia, October 9, 1931.

Dear Scott,

The enclosed editorial is a happy memory of our riding trip to English Centre in October, 1906.

I hope that this will find your wife, family, and self enjoying the best of health. I am trying to emulate Dr. McCleery's wolf park, and have in the legation garden here four young Bulgarian wolves, a Bulgarian jackal, and an Egyption[sic] eagle. Winter has come early to Sofia, and the mountains are snow-covered.

Very sincerely yours,
Henry W. Shoemaker,
American Minister.

The Hon. G. Scott Smith,
"Kane Republican,"
Kane, Pennsylvania,
